NCFA, the state's oldest conservation organization, was established in
1911. Today it is a private, nonprofit partnership of over 4,000 forest managers, landowners, mill operators, loggers, furniture
manufacturers, educators and others concerned about the long-term health
and productivity of the state's forest resources and the industries they
support.
Mission Statement: The North Carolina Forestry Association actively promotes healthy, productive forests by supporting the efforts of landowners and forestry-related businesses and organizations who responsibly manage or use forests.
The NCFA seeks to serve its membership through four major programs - Legislative Affairs, Training for Forestry Professionals, Education and Communications.

Bob
Slocum
Executive Vice President

Bob Slocum has served as the executive vice president of the NCFA since 1988. Slocum is
responsible for guiding the organization’s programs and represents the
association with the state legislature, the North Carolina Congressional
delegation and the media. A graduate of North Carolina State University
with a Forest Management Degree, Slocum has over 38 years of
experience in the forestry industry both at the local and national level.
Prior to directing the NCFA, Slocum served as vice president for forest
policy and research of the American Forest Council in Washington, D.C. He
currently serves on several environmental boards, including the N.C.
Agriculture and Forestry Awareness Study Commission, the Wetlands Task
Force, the board of directors of the North Carolina Biofuels Center and is a charter member of the National Council on Private Forests.
Chris Brown
Director of Communications

Chris
Brown joined NCFA as the director of
communications in 2000. Brown is responsible for
all media relations for the NCFA, including the promotion of National
Forest Products Week through the NCFA’s Goods from the Woods campaign.
He coordinates the production of all publications such as the monthly
newsletter, the Treeline, the NCFA’s video, “Forestry: Keeping North Carolina Green and Growing” in 2002 and the
NCFA’s website. He also submits articles for publication in other trade
magazines. Brown joined the NCFA after spending six years as the public
relations director for the National Hockey League Carolina Hurricanes.
Prior to joining the Hurricanes, Brown was a sports information director
at Trinity College (CT) and the United States Merchant Marine Academy. He
earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Trinity.
Jennifer
Grantham
Director of Education

Jennifer
has served as the NCFA's director of education since 1997. She is
responsible for the association’s education programs such as the
Forestry and Environmental Camps, Project Learning Tree and Sustainable
Forestry Teachers' Tour. She annually develops new educational materials
such as the NCFA’s posters as
well as creating and implementing programs for school teachers and
children, landowners and the general public. Before arriving at the NCFA,
Grantham worked with the North Carolina Department of Environment and
Natural Resources, Division of Land Resources, as a sedimentation
education specialist. Grantham earned both her bachelor’s degree in Soil
Science and her master’s degree in Hydrology from North Carolina State
University.
Ann
Harper
Hunting Lease Liability/ Membership

Ann
Harper begins her fifth year with the NCFA. Harper is responsible for coordinating the NCFA’s hunting lease
insurance program, and she directs member services for the association. She
also is the point person for all board meetings, the NCFA's Annual Meeting
and Forestry Day in the Legislature.
Jack Swanner
Director of Logging and Transportation

Jack Swanner was named the association’s new Director of Logging and Transportation in July of 2011. Swanner comes to the NCFA after serving as the forestry advisor with the Biofuels Center located in Oxford, NC. With the Biofuels Center, Swanner served on several outreach committees, exploring and detailing biomass, biofuels and future markets emerging through technology.
Prior to joining the Biofuels Center, Swanner served as general manager at T&S Hardwoods, overseeing wood procurement, production and sales. He has also worked with Georgia Pacific in wood procurement in Warm Springs, Georgia. A graduate of Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in Forest Engineering, Swanner has developed, trained, and operated cable harvesting crews in western North Carolina.
Swanner is a registered forester. Has also served as president of the Southern Timber Purchaser Council, as president of the Southern Appalachian Multiple Use Council, and served as a board member on the Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers Association. |
