levations in the piedmont range from 180 feet in
the southeast to 1380 feet in the northwest. Most of the piedmont consists of well-rounded
hills and rolling ridges. The forests of piedmont North Carolina are primarily hardwood
with a variety of oak and hickory. On drier, recently disturbed sites, conifer forests
dominated by loblolly pine occur.
