- Forestry
and Environmental Camp
Each year, the NCFA
sponsors as many as eight Forestry and Environmental Camps for middle school
students in communities around the state. The camps are designed to make
students more aware of the environment around them and to teach practical
application of math, science and critical thinking skills. Students take
classes in silviculture, tree measurement, land measurement, wildlife, tree
identification, forest ecology, forest history and forest products. Hands-on
activities include using a compass, planting trees, identifying trees and
studying wildlife habitat. All camp instructors are volunteers from the
forest products industry and natural resource-related agencies who are
dedicated to giving students an educational experience that opens their
minds to the usefulness of subjects such as mathematics and science in their
daily lives.
- Project
Learning Tree
Project Learning Tree (PLT)
is an award-winning, international environmental
education program designed for teachers and other educators working with
students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. Educators who participate in
a six-hour training workshop learn to incorporate more than 90
multidisciplinary hands-on activities in their environmental education
programs. Training workshops are held at schools and other facilities
throughout the state. A schedule of upcoming workshops is available by
calling Renee Strnad at (919) 515-5518. PLT is sponsored in North Carolina
by the NCFA, the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service and the N.C. Division of
Forest Resources.
