A state agency that provides basic forest
management planning (up to five days a year are free) and forestry information,
seedlings for reforestation, lists of consulting foresters and timber buyers by
county, cost-share programs, BMP implementation, fire control, some site
preparation activities, educational state forests and school programs. Most
counties have local offices and are listed in the phone book under State of
North Carolina, Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The Southern Center for
Sustainable Forests provides innovative research and practical applications for
enhancing sustainable forest management on industrial and non-industrial private
forest land in the South. The center provides an umbrella for
research activities ranging from sustainable production of wood fiber to
extensive management of non-industrial private forest land to the broad
management of forested landscaptes for non-market values. The Southern
Center for Sustainable Forests is a cooperative organization made up of North
Carolina State University's Department of Forestry, Duke University's Nicholas
School of the Environment and North Carolina's Division of Forest
Resources.

The Southern Forest Resource Assessment is a
comprehensive effort to compile and analyze data and information necessary to
evaluate the status of the forest resources of the southern United States.
The study hopes to examine their productivity, ecological diversity and
sustainability. Forest resources to be evaluated include timber and
forest products, biological attributes, and aquatics. The geographic scope
of the evaluation includes the 13 states that comprise the Southern Region
(Region 8) of the Forest Service: AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, OK, SC. TN,
TX, and VA in the southern United States. The study is led by U.S. Forest
Service in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S.
Fish & Wildlife Service, the Tennessee Valley Authority and the state
forestry agencies throughout the South.
