Trees

A tree is a woody plant with one main stem -- a trunk -- that allows the tree to support itself and to grow thicker and taller than other plants. Trees come in different shapes and sizes, ranging from the 350-foot tall redwoods of the Pacific Northwest to the saguaro cacti that don’t even have leaves. Worldwide there are more than 20,000 different species of trees, 800 of which grow in North America and 180 of which grow in North Carolina.
